Top 10 Ways to Prevent Lint

Hints and tricks to Avoid lint in your locs!

1) Shake out vigorously, or brush your locs with a baby brush (soft bristles). This can loosen and remove any debris that are on the surface of your locs.

*Once locs are wet, anything that is on them that is not thoroughly rinsed will become embedded in the loc.

2) Avoid using traditional shampoos and heavy conditioners that are meant for use on loose natural hair in. The products that you used when you were loose natural are not going to be the same product that you use once you’re hair is locked. Opt for shampoos and products that were made specifically for a locs.  Dilute any thick conditioners prior to placing them on your locs to ensure easy rinsing.

3) Try to avoid cotton hats, fuzzy scarves, and clothing made of similar fabrics. If you wear these items, consider wearing an up-do and keep your locs off of them.

4) Wrap you hair before sleep with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet.

5) Wash hair regularly. It seems like common sense but you want to make sure that you thoroughly wash your locs; do not rush through your washing. Thoroughly wash each section of your hair paying special attention to the area that you cannot see, rinsing and repeating. And spend an excessive amount of time rinsing. When in doubt about your ability to do this on your own, consider making the investment of having your hair professionally washed.

6) Another note on washing. . . Rinse and repeat!! Besides taking your time and thoroughly washing each section, consider shampooing twice during each wash session. Here’s an eye-opening experiment:

Wash your hair in a sink, plug the sink when you rinse so that you can see the color of the captured water rinsing from your hair. Many may find that their water will range from cloudy to full on brown water. Please wash again to insure your water is clear or nearly clear before deciding that your hair is completely clean.  * Use lint free towel to dry locs – squeeze locs individually with towel to capture left over hair product.*

7) Keep hair grooming product use to a minimum. If your hair is not dyed, severely damaged, or being exposed to harsh conditions then you do not need to routinely condition, grease, or spray your hair with conditioning agents. The beauty of locs is that they should be a low maintenance, minimal manipulation hair system requiring very little. Over use of product causes build up, but also for fabrics, dust, and debris to stick in the product being used.

8) When cleaning, dusting, or participating in outdoor activities try to cover locs, whenever possible.

9) Be cognizant of furniture, pillows, and bedding you rest your head on. Even if the couch/bed/pillow isn’t made of a linty material, it can still hold fabrics or debris from others that have used it prior to you.
